An increase in the enrollment rate of our students who took the International Baccalaureate exams and a higher number of diplomas obtained, stand out among the positive figures of the latest tests.
The Class of 2024 is Santiago College´s generation with the highest number of IB Diplomas obtained to date. There are two main reasons for this increase: a higher enrollment rate (72.3% of the class), driven by the change in the date on which SC takes these exams, and a high pass rate (93.6% of the candidates). If both figures are combined, it can be concluded that 67.7% of the cohort obtained their IB Diploma, a figure that ostensibly exceeds previous years.
All SC students are IB students. The journey begins with the PYP in Infant School and ends with the exams, for students who decide to be Diploma candidates as part of the DP (which lasts two years and begins in 10th grade). The 2022 Seniors were the first SC generation to take this assessment process in May, since until 2021 they did so in November of 4th grade. This change led to a higher number of students taking the Diploma exams, as it did not coincide with the national period of university admission exams.
Santiago College is part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) since 1981. This organization, founded in 1968 and headquartered in Geneva, has a presence in more than 5,500 schools located in 162 countries around the world. The attributes that make up the IB profile involve a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them.
Obtaining the IB Diploma opens additional roads to higher education, both inside and outside Chile. From a deepest point of view, these results are a good measure of the learning that our students have achieved in terms of content and skills during the Diploma Program, but also transversal. Clear proof of this is the historical maximum score obtained this year by Juan Pablo Arteaga, with 42 total points out of a total of 45, matching Kai Hodali Petzold´s results obtained in 2021.
Furthermore, its massiveness reflects the success of the SC’s sustained efforts in terms of inclusive education, understood as the will to remove and reduce as many barriers to learning as possible. These good results reflect the excellence in education that characterizes the mission of Santiago College.
The programs that give life to the IB curriculum – Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP) – are designed, as detailed by the organization itself, to develop well-rounded individuals who can face today’s challenges with optimism and an open mind. In its definition of principles, the IB emphasizes the formation of caring, well-informed and knowledge-hungry young people, capable of contributing to creating a better and more peaceful world through mutual understanding and intercultural respect.
