As part of Santiago College’s efforts to work toward Eco-Schools certification, our 2nd graders took part in an activity aimed at raising awareness about the amount of plastic we waste every day.
Last week, together with our janitors, students collected plastic waste generated across the school and used the materials to create “plastic monsters”—providing a powerful visual representation of the amount of unnecessary waste we produce.
This activity is part of “Plastic Free and Proud,” a campaign that aims to reduce single-use plastics at Santiago College and encourage more sustainable habits among students and their families.
The initiative reflects the broader effort of different members of our community to build a more sustainable school by promoting the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle both on campus and at home.
A follow-up activity will take place on Wednesday, October 7, to compare the waste collected and see if the amount of single-use plastic found in our bins has decreased. With the commitment of our entire community, we hope to progressively reduce unnecessary plastic waste and move together toward a more sustainable SC.
